When there are multiple terms in the tradition for the same configuration, we chose one term as primary, regarding the others as synonyms, on the following basis:
The most frequently used term for the configuration, to the extent we can discern that; otherwise
The clearest term (e.g., a Latin or Greek term that has a fairly obvious meaning in modern languages; otherwise
The earliest known term; otherwise
Greek has priority over Latin which has priority over modern languages; otherwise
Flip a coin.
Sometimes these policies are in conflict (especially 2 & 4), in which case we just haggle it out.
