Labelling Policies

When there are multiple terms in the tradition for the same configuration, we chose one term as primary, regarding the others as synonyms, on the following basis:

  1. The most frequently used term for the configuration, to the extent we can discern that; otherwise

  2. The clearest term (e.g., a Latin or Greek term that has a fairly obvious meaning in modern languages; otherwise

  3. The earliest known term; otherwise

  4. Greek has priority over Latin which has priority over modern languages; otherwise

  5. Flip a coin.

Sometimes these policies are in conflict (especially 2 & 4), in which case we just haggle it out.
